The Third Party Center (TPC) of the AOA comprises AOA staff and volunteer optometrists who, through a combined effort, advocate for optometry’s participation in third party health care programs.
One of the TPC’s primary functions is to act as consultant and liaison to insurance plans, managed care systems, large employers, employer coalitions, and other organizations involved with third party health care delivery. As part of this process, the TPC promotes and encourages rational inclusion of optometry as a panel provider of medical eye care services. The reThink eyecare campaign is the cornerstone of this process and one of the largest programs within the TPC.
Other functions of the TPC include serving as a clearing house of information on third party issues and national health care delivery systems, educating AOA member doctors about how they might advocate for themselves with third party health care delivery systems so that they may succeed in the managed care environment in which they practice, and monitoring the development and use of appropriate and uniform coding systems.
